Situated at the western tip of the Sperrin Mountains and on the banks of the River Mourne, Strabane - meaning the 'white strand' in Irish - is an historic market town with strong American connections. At Dergalt is the Wilson Ancestral Home, once owned by the grandparents of Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States from 1913 to 1921. Pagan sites include The Druid's Altar, Castlederg, a chamber grave, and The Druid's Circle, an enigmatic stone circle, Christian ruins in the Strabane area include Ardstraw Monastery, founded in 540 AD by St. Eugene, and Scarvaghin Monastery, founded by the Franciscans in 1456.
There are numerous events and festivals to entice the visitor, including the Flower of Sweet Strabane, the Sion Mills Strawberry Fair, the Strabane Hiring fair and the Northern Ireland Driving Championships held at Baronscourt.
